Eating disorders, particularly bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder, are common in the community. Accurate diagnosis and assessment is crucial to determine the most appropriate management.
The aims of this workshop are
The workshop will be orientated towards primary care clinicians from medicine, psychology, social work, dietetic, occupational/activity therapy and cognate disciplines. It will also be an excellent introduction for any clinician wishing to develop their skills in eating disorders and /or prior to undertaking training in provision of specific eating disorder therapies.

The aims of this workshop are
- To train in clinical skills assessment of diagnostic features and related clinical features including comorbidities of eating disorders with reference to the DSM-5 and ICD-11 diagnostic schemes
- To train attendees in the use of assessment instruments, particularly the Eating Disorder Examination (EDE) and the EDE-Questionnaire.
- To equip attendees with an appreciation of appropriate clinical care pathways according to current national and international guidelines for evidence based care.

Professor Phillipa Hay is an academic psychiatrist with two higher research degrees. She is MB ChB, 1983, University of Otago, Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists, Elected February 1991, M.D., University of Otago, 1993. In 2015 she received the Lifetime Leadership Award from the ANZ Academy for Eating Disorders and in 2013 she was elected Fellow of the Academy for Eating Disorders. She has worked continuously in clinical academic universities and teaching hospital posts where her dedicated time for research has competed but complemented with clinical and teaching responsibilities. She has conducted many training workshops in administration of the Eating Disorder Examination and is widely published in eating disorder assessment, classification and treatment. |
Professor Stephen Touyz trained at the University of Cape Town, Witwatersrand University, Groote Schuur, Valkenberg and the War Memorial Children's Hospital. He spent ten years at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Head of Department of Medical Psychology at Westmead Hospital (8 years) and has been Professor in Clinical Psychology and Honorary Professor in Psychiatry at the University of Sydney for 23 years. He is regarded internationally for his work on eating disorders and was the recipient of the first ever lifetime award by the Australian and New Zealand Academy of Eating Disorders. He is a past president of the prestigious Eating Disorders Research Society and was awarded the Ian Campbell Memorial Prize in 2014 by the Clinical College of the Australian Psychological Society. He has published widely in the field of eating disorders with a special interest on assessment including the development of both the ANSOCQ and CASIAN as well as understanding the aetiology of eating disorders and improving treatment.
